In chapter nine the funeral for Gatsby was held. The reason why i choose this picture was because Gatsby had tragically died and was buried in a cemetery. At Gatsby's funeral only Nick, Mr. Gatz, and Owl Eyes came to pay their respects. I also choose this picture because it is empty. This would resemble the fact that no one came to see Gatsby. And obviously it resembles the theme of death carried out in chapters eight and nine.
In chapter nine the main theme that is carried out through this is the theme of false friendships. Some examples of false friendships are Gatsby and his "friends" from his party, Tom and Nick, and Daisy and Gatsby.
The first example of false friendships is Gatsby and his "friends" from the party. The people at the party would just show up. They did not care if they were not invited they just went because they viewed Gatsby as someone who would help them with their status in the world. They knew nothing about Gatsby. All that they knew was the things that they heard from each other which were all lies. This concept come up again when Gatsby passes away and Nick is trying to find people to come to his funeral so Gatsby will not be "alone." Thus, in life you really do not know people in life.
The second example of false friendship is Tom and Nick. Through out the book we see many of the same arguments and conversations between these to characters. They are the same because Tom always tries to show off to Nick. Tom tries to show Nick and everyone else that he has better things than most people. He also wants everyone to know this. Tom also treats Nick with disrespect because you would think that just because Daisy and Nick are cousins he would treat him better but he does not. Thus, Tom is just a big show off and does not care about others.
The third example of false friendships is Daisy and Gatsby. I have said this many times but the reason why their friendship is false is because Daisy is cheating on Tom, they did not wait for each other as they promised, and Daisy promised Gatsby that she would go with him and start a new life with Gatsby but she did not keep this true. Clearly, Daisy and Gatsby's relation was doomed from the start.
In chapter eight a common theme that is used is the theme of revenge. Revenge can be illustrated by Daisy choosing Tom over Gatsby and Wilson killing Gatsby.

The first example of revenge is Daisy choosing Tom over Gatsby. After they all come back from the city they are still uneasy about the fact that Myrtle is dead. Tom and Daisy head home but Gatsby decides to stay at the house to one see if she will be safe and also see if she will leave with Gatsby. He stays there until four o'clock in the morning but to his surprise Daisy stays in the house. This is considered to be revenge because Daisy is getting revenge on Gatsby for leaving her when he went off to war. She loved him so much and it made her very sad when he left. This could also make her angry at Gatsby because it might hint upon that he chose a career over her. Daisy would take revenge by leaving Gatsby and choosing money(Tom) over Gatsby(love/ less money). Thus, people hold grudges and use revenge to get back at people.

The second example of revenge is Wilson killing Gatsby. In the novel after Myrtle was killed Wilson went crazy and lost his mind. He lost his mind because unlike Myrtle he actually loved her and found out that she was seeing another man. Later Wilson confronted Tom because he wanted to see if Tom knew who the driver of the yellow car was. Tom said it was Gatsby and Wilson assumed that since Gatsby was "the driver" of the yellow car that he was also the man that Myrtle was seeing. Later that day when Gatsby was in his pool Wilson went there and shot him. Wison viewed this as revenge because he was getting relief for what happened. Clearly, Wilson was wrong and should not have jumped to conclusions.

In chapter eight we learn more about how Wilson is dealing with Myrtles tragic death and what he will do about it. As anyone who read the book can see is that Wilson loved his wife very much but Myrtle did not. Wilson was lent to believe that Gatsby was the one who killed Myrtle because of the car he was driving. We find out earlier that Wilson asked Tom who owned a yellow car and who was the driver. I chose this picture because of what Wilson did with the information he was giving. After being questioned by the police Wilson decided to go to Gatsby's house and get revenge. Wilson got revenge by killing Gatsby(who he thought killed Myrtle) and taking his own life. To me he took his own life so one he would not be so sad and so he could be with his wife. This picture also illustrates how people can take innocent lives. That is the reason why i chose this picture for chapter eight.

Chapter seven is considered the most important chapter in the whole book. During this chapter Daisy, Nick, Gatsby, Jordan, and Tom all decide to go to the city. On their way to the city Tom says that Gatsby and Daisy should drive his car and everyone else can go in Gatsby's car, but later they switch back. While on their way back from the city after many heated arguments everyone drives through the Vally of ashes. In the Vally of ashes is Wilson's house and garage with Wilson and Myrtle home. We also find out that Wilson has found out that Myrtle was having an affair, but with who he does not know. As Daisy and Gatsby are going by Myrtle runs out into the road and gets hit by the car. Daisy was the one that was driving so they drive off. This picture is important because it shows the horrifying fact of what has happened to Myrtle over a huge mistake. This also may illustrate the idea of when lying and cheating gets you or when it catches up with you. Myrtle in this instance shows how innocence can be taking from us even though she was anything but innocent. And lastly this picture illustrates what can happen to people in life when everything may seem OK but in reality is not.
A common theme that people can observe in chapter seven is the theme of irony. Some examples of irony are Daisy and Gatsby having an affair, Daisy killing Myrtle, and finally Daisy leaving Gatsby.
The first example of irony is Daisy and Gatsby having an affair. Through out most of the novel Tom is cheating on Daisy with Myrtle. But once Daisy and Gatsby get reacquainted they start seeing each other. Even though Daisy knew what was going on with Tom and Myrtle she did nothing to stop it, her and Tom even had a child together but apparently that meant nothing to them if they really cared about their child. It seems that Daisy's view on this was is i do not confront this it will just go away. Also if she started to have an affair it would be OK because Tom was doing it to. Daisy and Gatsby's affair was kept on the down low so no one would figure it but later lead to more lying, betrayal, sadness, regret. Thus, having affairs just leads to trouble in life.
The second example of irony in the novel is Daisy killing Myrtle. As everyone was coming back from the city Daisy was driving with Gatsby in front of Tom and the rest of the gang when she hit Myrtle. They did not even stop because they were scared that Daisy would be thrown in jail and get in major trouble. This is considered irony because the fact that Daisy herself killed Myrtle. It is irony because Tom was cheating on Daisy with Myrtle. This can be viewed that Daisy was aimming to hit Myrtle. But in fact she was not. It is also ironic because Daisy and Myrtle were both having affairs with different people that everyone knew. Clearly, lies break the foundation of trust and relationships.
The final example of irony in the novel is Daisy leaving Gatsby. Near the end of the chapter we find out that Gatsby has hidden the car that hit Myrtle. He also will not leave Daisy's house until she goes to bed so he knows that she is safe. Gatsby does this by staying outside of her window and watches for the light to go out. What you see when the author is describing this is Daisy and Tom sitting down like nothing is wrong in their lives. This may illustrate who Daisy has chosen. It shows that even though Daisy is not happy with her marriage with Tom but she will always stay with him threw thick and thin. Gatsby believed that they would run off together and start a new life with a new family. But in reality that was not the case. Daisy did not leave Tom. Even at Gatsby's funeral when she did not even come to pay her respects. (which you will find out later) Thus, people who they chose out of life in the sense of what they can get out of the relationship.

I chose this picture because of Dan Cody. In chapter 6 we learn that Jay Gatsby is actually James Gatz. One day on the beach Gatsby sees this huge boat and goes and sees who's it is. He later becomes aquanted with Dan. Dan likes him from the start and asks him if he would like to travel around the world with him. Gatsby says yes. Later Dan saddly dies. He leaves a good part of his money to Gatsby. Hence where Gatsby gets all of his money from. This picture is important because it relates to Dans boat. Also it shows how they traveled around the world. It can also illustrate how people view money itself.
In chapter six a theme that is portrayed is the theme of identity. In chapter six we find out that Jay Gatsby's real name is James Gatz. We also find out that Gatsby came from a poor family and grew up with nothing. One day when Gatsby is on the beach he sees a boat. Gatsby becomes curious of this because it is a yacht and he can tell that the owner of the yacht is very wealty. Gatsby decides to row out to the yacht and see whos on it itself. When he gets out there he meets Dan Cody. Dan befriends him and asks him if he would like to travel around the world. After they are all done traveling Dan saddly dies. When he dies he left a good amount of money to Gatsby.
When Gatsby changes his name he has good reasons for it. One of the reasons is to start over and make a new for himself. He believed that if he changed his named to something more "wealthy" sounding. The theme is identity because it shows that Gatsby is struggling with who he is as a person. An example of this is how he has many parties. He has many parties because he is trying to fill a void in his life. That void can be determined as him wanting to be with Daisy or Gatsby trying to show to everyone that he has friends and people love and care about him. That is why the theme in chapter six is identity.
A recurring theme in chapter five is time. Some examples of time in this chapter are Jordan’s flashback of Daisy and Gatsby, and how Daisy and Gatsby react after seeing each other for a long time.
During the chapter Nick and Gatsby are getting ready for Daisy’s arrival at Nick’s house. Gatsby is very nervous and does not know what to do. Gatsby hires someone to cut Nicks lawn because he wants everything to look perfect for Daisy. Nick and Gatsby’s plan is to have tea with Daisy and bring up old memories. As soon as Daisy gets to Nick’s house Gatsby runs out of the house so he will not be seen. Then Gatsby comes around front and knocks on the door, so it seems that he is just coming over. When Daisy and Gatsby see each other it is very weird and awkward. They both do not know what to say. They eventually warm up to each other and are over powered by their emotions and start to cry. They start to cry because they have all ways loved each other. Also that now it seems that they can finally be together and see each other.
In Jordan’s flashback she is a pre teen and is walking down the street. While she is doing this she sees what she now realizes to be Daisy and Gatsby in a car kissing(this happened in chapter 4 but is important in 5 that’s why I bring it up). Back then they were in love but while Gatsby was in the war Daisy had to marry Tom. Jordan brings this up to Nicks attention so he will understand why Gatsby wants to have Daisy over his house.
All of this involves time because it illustrates what was and what will hope to be. In the past the novel showed us how grateful life is. In the future it shows us what has happened and how things in life do not always come out they way you have hoped. Time also can show us how people have changes physically and emotionally. That is why the major theme in chapter 5 is time.
